Kei ka

I rented a car on Tokunoshima, a little Kei ka.
Kei kas, a small car with a maximum of a 660 cc engine. They get tax and rego breaks and in a lot of places you don't even need a parking spot to be able to buy one. Yes in major cities, you need to have a parking spot before you can buy a normal car. This is a Suzuki Wagon R hybrid. The Suzuki Wagon R is the most popular selling Kei ka. Surprisingly zippy and easy to drive although I wouldn't want to go into a corner too fast.

  2. That's probably a fair description. You don't see them in Australia because they don't meet Australian safety standards. Although it did have an airbag. Designed for Japanese roads so high speed collisions would be rare. Most main roads on Tokunoshima were either 50 or 40 kph speed limits and I only encountered one stretch of road that had the maximum non-expressway speed limit of 60 kph.
